Judicial Experience and Legal Background

Judge DeLaney was elected to her current position in November, 2012 and officially sworn in on December 21, 2012.  Since Judge DeLaney took her oath as a District Court Judge, she has worked tirelessly to provide justice to the Sixth Judicial District.  Her current caseload includes civil cases, family law and domestic relations cases, criminal cases, probate cases, appeals from the Magistrate and Municipal Courts, and a variety of other general jurisdiction cases.  Judge DeLaney also presides over the Juvenile Drug Court Program in Luna County.  The Juvenile Drug Court Program is an intensive outpatient program that works with juveniles and their families who have come into contact with the juvenile justice system.  The juvenile and his/her family are required to attend individual and group counseling, anger management, family therapy, and parenting classes (for the parents), as well as be subjected to surveillance for curfew, school grades and attendance  and drug use monitoring.   Each family is required to attend court every week where Judge DeLaney reviews their progress in each component of the program and ensures compliance through incentives and sanctions.

In addition to her duties on the bench, Judge DeLaney is an active member of the local and statewide legal community. She is chair of the board for the Luna County Juvenile Justice Continuum of Services who administers funding through partnerships with Luna County to fund activities for the prevention of juvenile delinquency.  Judge DeLaney is a member of the board the Children’s Court Judges’ Association, as well as a member of the steering committee for the Corinne Wolfe Children’s Law Center at the University of New Mexico School of Law.  Judge DeLaney serves as the district representative for the District and Magistrate Judges Association, ensuring that the needs of the Sixth Judicial District are heard.  Recently Judge DeLaney was appointed by the New Mexico Supreme Court Chief Justice Barbara Vigil to sit on the Workload Steering Committee, a subcommittee of the Judiciary Budget Committee, to update information available about the workloads in our current Magistrate and District Court systems to determine staffing needs and where efficiency can be increased statewide.

On September 19, 2014, the New Mexico Judicial Performance Evaluation Commission will release its evaluations on nearly 90 judges standing for retention in the 2014 general election.  In order to be evaluated, each Judge must have served on the bench for over two years before the evaluations commenced earlier this year.  Because I was elected in November of 2012, I was not eligible for evaluation.

The evaluations that were completed by NMJPEC can be located at http://www.nmjpec.org/.
